Microneedling, SkinPen Review

Hey girlfriend! I don't know about you, but I am determined to FIGHT the aging process every step of the way. From the foods and nutrients I choose to put into my body, to esthetic procedures available to me today.

Today I went in for my very first microneedling procedure. I had been SO pumped, like a little kid in a candy store....UNTIL I started hearing about "vampire facials" and seeing pictures of THAT! OMGEEEE!

When I went in to see my Esthetician, Sharilyn, I told her how nervous I had been and she asked why...I explained the whole Kim Kardashian thing and seeing pictures of her with blood all over her face. She assured me that microneedling was different than a Vampire Facial. A Vampire Facial is microneedling with PRP. WHEW!!!

So what IS microneeding? Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure that helps minimize the signs of aging, improve the appearance of acne scars and rejuvenate aging skin. The SkinPen micro-needling device causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodeling of collagen and elastin.

So let's talk about the experience. There's literally no prep work to be done before your procedure. Once you get there you'll receive a numbing topical to get you ready. The entire process takes about 45 minutes. I didn't feel any pain and the only discomfort I had was around the eye lids. And I had a funny sneezing sensation when she did my nose :)

After the procedure I was red, but not nearly as red as I thought I would be. I looked and felt like I had a bad wind burn. The first 45 minutes are the worst as far as redness goes and then by the end of the evening it will appear to just look like a mild sunburn. No pain, just a little irritated.

No working out for 24 hours and no make up for about 48. I will go back in 30 days and then 30 days following. After that you can go anywhere from once a month to once a year, depending on your budget.

I have gone to Sharilyn Berg at Nirvana Med Spa in Alpharetta, GA for about 6 years now. I met her right after moving to the area from Illinois and have gone to her consistently ever since. She is amazing!!! She offers microdermabrasion, laser hair removal, laser for acne, Botox, Dysport and Juvaderm. The injections are provided by Dr. Obeid whom she works under.
